Alfombras Jueves Santo gallery

Antigua Guatemala is famous for its vibrant, elaborate religious festivities during the Antigua Semana Santa, or Holy Week, leading up to Easter. The most awe-inspiring part of Antigua's Semana Santa, however, are the brilliant carpets, or "alfombras".

This time I have prepared a different kind of image gallery of pictures I took yesterday in Antigua for Jueves Santo (Thursday Easter). Will upload the rest of the pictures in later posts. More pics after the jump:

Sand or sawdust (color-stained mostly) is used in the making of the carpets. Some other materials are used like flowers, fruits and pine leaves.

This one is extremely well elaborated with so many details.

A closeup of a multicolored carpet. All carpets are handmade and well-crafted rug takes about 3 hours to complete.

The rug with the parrots in the first photo looks the best I think. Amazing detail.
